Ladies, you know when that time of the month rolls around? Aunt Flo shows up for a few days, hogs your side of the bed, eats all your Cheerios, and doesn’t replace the toilet paper roll?
Yeah, well, me and Aunt Flo don’t get along so well.
PMS On Steroids
A few days before that special time of the month, I go a little crazy. I get hormonal, depressed, irritable, and confused about pretty much everything. I hate my life, blah blah blah.
And the really annoying thing is that I don’t realize what’s happening until it’s over. I really believe that sky is falling every terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, and then, oh wait, it’s just my “menses.” Hallelujah! I’m not totally insane!
Ok, maybe I am, but that’s another subject…
What About You?
I jest, but in all seriousness, PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome) is a real thing, and a lot of women suffer from it. If seven to ten days before your period hits people start mistaking you for your evil twin, then you might be one of the 85% percent of women who deal with PMS.
What about you? Do you suffer the same thing as me? You don’t have to endure it alone. There are things you can do.
Fight the Hormone Monster
First of all, try to recognize the situation for what it is. (I know, easier said than done.) Try tracking your cycle so that you know when your period’s coming up. When you start to feel those scary thoughts and moods creeping up, you’ll know that it’s not you, really, it’s the hormones.
That may not make you feel any better, but at least you’ll know what’s going on.
Take extra good care of yourself during this time. Hormones are extremely sensitive to diet, sleep, and exercise. Eat well, go to sleep on time, move around during the day.
Go outside and get some sun! Vitamin D is a great mood lifter.
Talk to somebody! We girls love to chat, and when you’re in the throes of pre-menstrual agony, grab a good friend and pour your heart out. It helps. (Thanks Mom! )
Speaking of talking to someone, pray about it! God isn’t a woman, but since He created us, He must know what we’re going through.
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31
You’re Not Alone
Seriously, if you think you might suffer from PMS, don’t brush it off. You can’t help it, it’s not your fault. It’s the subject of a lot of jokes and ridicule, but you shouldn’t let it ruin your week every month.
I’m working on it. I’m trying to be more balanced, calm, and disciplined during this time. And- I need ice cream, NOW!
